The Monocular Phaser Device (or MPD), still in beta testing, is worn on the head and is centered over one of the user's eyes for targeting purposes. The MPD was provided to Manticore for testing and Matt McFly, a member of the Security team, used it without being fully briefed. He placed the device on his head facing backward and shot himself in the eye. This new technology was acquired at the same time as the Interphasic Flechette Torpedos, Personal Cloaking Device and the Ablative Deployable Armor.

The idea for the MPD is for a new kind of 'hands free' weapons technology. Using a voice activated interface, the user can vanquish enemies while keeping their hands free for other uses. Issuing the command 'target', the unit will target all personnel without a StarFleet signature. The user is also able to include or exclude any target they wish. Issuing the 'fire' command will activate a pulse phaser attached near the right temple of the unit. The phaser will fire on the centered most target first and working its way outward.

The eyepiece is used for more than targeting as it allows the user to see in a variety of wavelengths unseen by the human eye. The MPD also works in tandem with the Personal Cloaking Device (PCD) in that it allows the user to see other registered teammates who are cloaked.
